White earworm

We all occasionally have an attack of ‘The White Earworm.’ This is the name given to one of those tunes that you hear playing on the radio or other device that keeps rolling round and round and round your brain – and for some reason you are unable to switch it off. It is usually an annoying tune or one that you do not even particularly like. It plants itself like a seed in the brain and no matter how hard you try you cannot rid yourself of its continual repetition. You are plagued with an attack of ‘The White Earworm’ and there it will stay, turning around inside your ear until it decides to wriggle away of its own accord … because no matter how strong a character you may be, this is one little addictive syndrome that you cannot discard all by yourself.

To mock this nasty little creature, I decided to make an animated gif. I hope that you enjoy my little white earworm … and that perhaps next time you are attacked by one of these little brutes, you will think of him and perhaps laugh the problem away! It is rumoured, however, that if you hum a National Anthem theme for ten whole minutes the problem will just disappear, at least until it strikes again!!

‘I’m a pretty boy!’

There is nothing quite like one of these birds to make a person think of far away places and characters out of fictional books such as Treasure Island.

Perhaps we shouldn’t romanticize about pirates but the pirates of years gone by have many interesting facets that have almost been lost to us all. Many did purchase parrots, keep them as pets on board ship and then sell them when they stepped back onto dry land. Parrots fetched a very high price – they were both brightly coloured and intelligent and many could talk so well that they became the ‘must have’ pet of the day by the wealthy.

The last few days my cat has been like a young child. When she is in the house she wants to go outside and when she has gone outside she is knocking the door to come straight back in again! We have never had a cat flap and instead bought a large bell with a wooden paddle that slips onto the handle of the back door. It hangs down like a pendulum and when the cat wants to come inside she simply flicks her paw onto the bell which rings, at the same time the small wooden paddle knocks the door. It is very efficient and we can hear it from all over the house. The last few days, however, have been a keep-fit trial of going back and forth to the kitchen door letting the cat in and out and in and out ... perhaps there is going to be some kind of change in the weather - something that she can sense that we can't. Or perhaps she is trying to remind me that it will soon be her birthday. Who knows?

In one of her inside modes - she lay down by a door frame and started to flick her tail. She has never laid in this position before so I thought I would make a little animated gif of her lying there.

Dissolving blanket

During the night it snowed quite heavily. At least heavily enough to have left a soft white blanket over the lawn and flower beds. We awoke, however, to a bright blue sky and warm April sunshine which has melted the snow as quickly as it came ... it has now almost gone. A magic trick of nature!

The snow having now melted from the flower border leaves the small blue grape hyacinths waving in the spring breeze ...

We have escaped the snow which has surrounded most of the counties around where we live. When I ventured out into the garden near the pond I spotted one of the smaller varieties of daffodils gently swaying in the light breeze.

One of the things that I was especially pleased to see today was a clump of frogspawn in my pond. We have had a lovely family of frogs in the pond for a few years now. Many of them are very friendly and will allow you to stroke their heads ... so hopefully we should have one or two baby ones before too long.

It is Easter Monday ... I have no Easter bunnies - but thought you may enjoy real life baby squirrel animated gif's. I enjoy gif's because they enable you to send short films to friends and family by simply clicking onto them, then copy and pasting them onto emails. I think this is one of the most enjoyable things from modern technology. Of course you cannot have many frames in each gif but if you place them onto emails they enable you to forward a small piece of film to far off places. Enjoy ...

Finalising the Gif Animation

Open up your animation where it has been saved - then open up Gif maker.

Drag the saved picture onto the Gif maker. This has to be done until all of the pictures that have been chosen to make up the end Animated Gif have been dragged into position. Then decide how long each picture needs to stay on the screen - and what colour you would prefer the background to be or perhaps choose to leave it transparent and may be choose to restore the background. Decide how long it is to run - how many times. Then, finally test out what the end Gif will look like using the forward arrow. You can amend any part at this point from the background to the length of time you would like each picture to run until you are happy with the end result.

Finally, once you have decided to save the completed Gif you will need to find an image hosting company on the web that will host your Gif so that it can be viewed as an animation on a website or in an email, etc. My tree is hosted by Image Shack. Making Simple Animated Gif's

There appear to be few websites that help the novice animater free of charge. So for those who have never dabbled in creating an animation but would like to have a go at seeing their own achievements here is how to do a simple animation in the paint program. Firstly, it is best to come up with a simple idea something that you find reasonably easy to draw. Perhaps sketch out the idea on a scrap of paper. Choose the size which you want the end product to be and also the background colour and save the blank canvas as a 24-bit Bitmap (*.bmp; *dib). Find this in the save as type pull down arrow underneath the File name line.

Once this has been done then open up the saved Bitmap once more and use the magnifying glass to enlarge the canvas. Decide on what features you would like to animate and draw your picture to that point before once more saving as a Bitmap. Sometimes if your drawing is made up of many lines then it could pay to save it as you are going along but place a simple note alongside it such as "nfu" not for use in your final animation.

As this is called 'tree lights' the next step is to decide where the tree lights are to be placed.

After placing where the wire of the lights should go - the lights may then be added.

Finally, all of the bitmap pictures that you want to use need to be saved in Gif format and dragged onto a Gif maker. Three pictures have been used in the above simple picture of tree lights flashing.

Animated Gif's

Since having my first computer I have always been intrigued with animated Gifs. I suppose that it could be compared with the thrill of seeing the first cartoon as a child. I have always found it rather magical the way that animated gifs can be copied and pasted onto emails and they carry on working.

I have drawn a simple 'growing garden' Gif to see if I could produce one by using the paint program. I used the pencil tool within the paint program and drew straight onto the PC screen. When I had finished I used an Image Hosting website to get it to work on Blogger. I was pleased with the result and will definitely have a go at drawing more Gif's.
