Swede scandal - knocking neeps

In England they are called swedes and north of the border in Scotland they are known as neeps and they have been a favourite vegetable for hundreds of years. Slightly orange in hue with a buttery but peppery taste that make an excellent change in the diet to the potato.

But what has happened to this ancient vegetable? Over the last few weeks I have purchased a few - they are pale, flavourless shadows of the swede that we have grown to know and love. Are the ones currently available some sort of GM variety? Are they a cross breed between swede and sugar beet?

Is there anyone out there who knows what has happened to this lovely, round vegetable????

I have never heard of the vegetable over here in the USA, so now you have me curious enought to do some research.
Sounds a bit like a yam or sweet potato though from your description.

The one's we get in our organic veg box are almost a custard colour when cooked - not quite orange, but nowhere near as pale as a potato.

Personally speaking, I think they've vile, but that's just me. :) Give me savoy cabbage any day.

I live in metro Atlanta. Today I had something called a butternut squash - for the first time. It sounds as if it might be its first cousin. It was oh, so tasty. :-)

The problem is, i dunno what is this vegetable... swede or neep, eitherway, i am unaware of how it looks like and how it is cooked or eaten. I apologize for being ignorant on this and i feel sorry for myself...^_^

At least if it is in a Muslim country, there would be notation if they are GM or not i guess... are they not labeled whether they are GM or not? GM proponents says that organisms are ought to be better tasting and better quality if engineered and modified. SO maybe your veggie is just sick or weak when it was harvested.

I haven't had swede for ages but I love it mashed with carrots.
