Worrying, whittling, wasps

It is now well into August and although there haven't been many wasp sightings they have been busy. This time of the year they begin to gnaw at the wood preserver on the garden furniture. Every year they come into the garden and gnaw lines into the wooden furniture removing the preserver. They can't be using it to make their nests for those were constructed along time ago. So this must be for another reason. I wonder, if like the honey bee they are under attack from a nest or hive mite? I know that currently the honey bees are being killed off in their millions by these little mites ... could the wasps be facing the same crisis? Could the wasps have found the answer to eradicate the little mites? Has anyone else had similar activity on their wooden garden furniture?

The only problem i have with wasps is stinging me. I had to go to the breaker box last summer and didn't know they'd built a nest there. I got stung by 3 different ones and my hand resembled a balloon since that's where they all stung me. Lets just say it was less than pleasant.

We have plenty of wasps where we live. We had a wasps nest last year and ended up with the kitchen full of them. Again this year we have another wasps next, thankfully this time they have not got into the house.

We have had a few here, maybe because it is very green here and flora are abundant. I don't mind them. If they don't bother me then I don't want to bother them lol. Good observation though.

That sounds so strange - I've never heard of wasps doing this. I read some facts about wasps and found out that wasps feed their young (larvae)"meat" (the paralyzed bodies of insects or chewed-up insects) - could be they are just gathering food for their young.

This is very peculiar. I wonder why they want that. The wasps come into my backyard and get mud which I assume is for their nest.

I can't speak about Wood Furniture, but I have caught wasps chewing holes through my plastic shed!!! I couldn't believe it. I had no idea they could chew through things like that.

I have had wasps gnaw at cedar wood, items and furniture in our back yard. Not sure why they do it though.
