Britain is divided into counties - many have shire on the end of them - often one of the main cities or towns within the county actually starts with the first part of the county's name. The city of York has shire added to the end of it and the county is Yorkshire. Worcester (pronounced Wuster) has shire added to the end of it and thus you get Worcestershire (pronounced Wustersher), Warwick adds shire (pronounced Worricksher) and so on ... However some counties such as Devon will add shire on to it when referring to produce - such as Devonshire (pronounced Devonsher) teas, scones, toffees.

The House of York used the white rose as an emblem in the Wars of the Roses which lasted between the House of York and the House of Lancaster during medieval England from 1455 to 1487. Yorkshire still recognise the white rose and it is used to represent the county emblem and Lancashire still uses the red rose which also represents its county emblem. In Worcestershire we usually use three pears as our emblem sometimes shown in a tree.
